Usnea (Usnea barbata)

Usnea is a powerful herb well, lichen, that I fell in love with during my time in herb school. I favored working with it so much that during harvest hikes with my herb my classmates, they would collect pieces of Usnea throughout the hike and pass them to me. While serving on medical missions in Panamá, I saw Usnea growing high in the mountains of the rainforest, with some strands reaching nearly 10 feet in length. Later, an Elder in the village told us that she remembered her Great Grandmother using it whenever they caught colds.

Historically, Usnea has been INCREDIBLY helpful for respiratory infections like bronchitis and pneumonia, as well as viral infections like the flu and common cold. It’s a good to use in combination with other herbs like echinacea.

Ways to use Usnea: Tinctures, Teas, Topical salve
