Mullein (Verbascum thapsus)

Mullein has become one of my favorite plants in the apothecary. My Grandma shares stories of going out and harvesting Mullein with my Great Grandma. It’s a powerful plant that has been getting well deserved attention. I’ve used this herb during both of my pregnancies, with both of my children, and with the Elders in my family. During the winter months and holidays, it’s one of the top things clients restock on.

Traditionally, mullein has been used throughout the South by Midwives, Traditional Herbalists, and Rootworkers. It’s most commonly used to assist the body in clearing issues associated with the upper respiratory system. When there is trapped mucus in the chest, Mullein can assist the body in producing a more effective cough that expels the trapped mucus. Mullein is also known to assist the body in ridding any excess fluid retention due to it’s diuretic like constituents.

Within my Dikenga Healing system, Mullein is considered a cooling herb and it’s safe for use throughout the lifespan. Spiritually, mullein can be used in floor washes to expel negative energies.

Ways to use Mullein: Tea, Tinctures, Bath, Floor wash
